DA condemns attack on doctor and his family

By Cllr Ronald Matlholoa, DA Councillor, Ditsobotla, Lichtenburg:

The Democratic Alliance in Ditsobotla, Lichtenburg notes with great concern the brutal attack on a Thusong Hospital Doctor and his family.

A group of men allegedly armed with guns attacked the doctor and his family after his evening shift at the hospital.

Doctors play an important role in the society by providing health care services and saving lives. They cannot afford to work under intimidating and unsafe conditions.

The DA is also concerned that in the past eight months, the Thusong Hospital Board has not had a sitting nor has there been an oversight visit of the premises.

The DA will also demand that more safety and security measures be implemented to ensure that doctors do not get intimidated or threatened when they are on duty.

The North West being a predominantly rural area it struggles to attract health care workers. It is therefore imperative to create an encouraging and safe work environment in hospitals.

The DA will write to Health MEC Magome Masike to demand clarity on why the board, whose sole responsibility is to ensure the proper daily administration and operation of the hospital, has not met in over eight months.

I will request that that MEC Masike provide a full audit report of the operation of the hospital.
