DA condemns practise of female mutilation in Bloemfontein

By Patricia Kopane, DA Leader in the Free State:

The DA condemns in the strongest possible terms the illegal and unethical practise of female mutilation uncovered in Bloemfontein.

It is shocking that the practise of female mutilation is still practised in the 21st century in certain parts of the world. Uncovering this barbaric practise in our own country is a shock beyond belief.

According to the SAPS several women from Lesotho have been victimised including a girl child aged seven. We urge the SAPS to utilise all resources available to them to identify the victims so that they may receive the counselling and medical treatment they need.

These incidents of female mutilation should be considered severe Human Rights violations and should be prosecuted as such.

The DA also calls on the Free State Provincial Government  to spearhead an initiative to eradicate the scourge of illegal medical practitioners, promising same-day abortions and genital surgery, from our cities in the province.

These practitioners deface public spaces with their illegal advertisements and exploit the desperation of both men and women. Free State municipalities have a responsibility to remove these unsightly and illegal advertisements.

The media in the Free State can also play a role in preventing illegal medical practises by refusing to place advertisements from these bogus doctors.
