DA denounces brutal farm attack in Harrismith

By Leona Kleynhans, DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature:

On Friday evening, an elderly couple was attacked in their home in Harrismith. Ms Martha Rhadebe was brutally attacked, but managed to escape, unfortunately, her husband and the farm manager, Mr Robert Rhadebe, died in the brutal attack.

The DA extends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Martha Rhadebe on the untimely death of her husband and wish her a speedy recovery.

The DA in the Free State denounces the violent and brutal farm attack that took place in Harrismith on Friday.

This latest attack brings the total recorded farm murders in the Free State to 16 this year alone.

We welcome Police, Roads and Transport MEC Butana Khompela’s remarks last week in the legislature that farm attacks have no place in the province and that they will make available resources for the prevention of farm attacks and the arrest of perpetrators.

The safety and security of the Free State’s rural communities remains one of the DA’s biggest concerns. The agricultural sector in the province plays a critical role in our provincial economy and contributes significantly to South Africa’s food security. We cannot allow the systematic targeting of our farming communities by murderous criminals.

The DA calls on the SAPS in the Free State to mobilise all available resources to apprehend Friday’s attackers as soon as possible so that they can be brought to justice.
