Ephraim Mogale Municipal’s watchdog is corrupt: R69 Million, not accounted for

By Gladys Phefadi, DA councillor at Ephraim Mogale Municipality:

The DA will write to Cohgsta MEC Makoma Makhurupetje to ask that she probe a clear bias in Ephraim Mogale municipal public accounts committee (MPCA)’s handling of investigations into R69 millions of irregular expenditure.

This follows an MPAC delay in probing irregularities, while protecting those involved against a clear waste of public money amounting to well over R69 million in irregular expenditure.

The expenditure was discovered by the Auditor General’s report in both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial years.

The irregular expenditure was taken to MPAC for probing through a council resolution, but neither a report nor recommendation were ever tabled at the council after a lengthy wait.

To the DA’s shock and surprise, the council in its most recent sitting resolved to condone the irregular expenditure.

The DA refuses to sweep this matter under the carpet and will not be complicit in protecting the ANC’s corrupt cadres.

The DA urges the MEC to pay attention to the abuse and misappropriation of taxpayers’ money, and the bias of the MPAC. This money wasted by the ruling party cadres could and should have assisted in building thousands of quality RDP homes, proper access to roads and providing sanitation for our most rural communities and schools.

With this decision, the ANC has rubber-stamped corruption and has approved the theft of public money.
