By Bosman Grobler MPL, Spokesperson on Economic Development and Tourism:
Government must increase its efforts across the entire illegal trade chain of rhino horns.
As the world commemorates rhino day today, it is imperative that government strengthen its relationship with our neighbouring countries to stem the poaching spree currently underway in the Kruger National Park, especially from Mozambique.
In order to eradicate the scourge of rhino poaching and show our support for rhino conservation the middlemen must be investigated, arrested and prosecuted.
The war on wildlife crime is escalating daily, especially in the Kruger National Park, where 544 rhinos have been poached since this began. A total of 749 have been slaughtered across South Africa.
Rhino poaching also has the potential to damage South Africa’s multi-billion rand tourism industry.
There’s a need for greater public awareness, stiffer sentencing of rhino poachers, and a campaign against the use of rhino horns.
