By Hlanganani Gumbi, MPL, DA KZN Spokesperson on Sport and Recreation:
AT a recent Sitting of the KZN Legislature, the DA called on Finance MEC, Belinda Scott, to provide a full report on the complete funding model for the Commonwealth Games to be hosted by Durban in 2022.
While the DA welcomes every opportunity to showcase our beautiful country and the city of Durban – as destinations of choice and investment – we believe that the Commonwealth bid was premature given that a full cost analysis remains incomplete.
The city also faces critical service delivery challenges. Many are still waiting on government when it comes to a quality health service, a proper education and finally employment that will pull them out of the poverty trap.
It is therefore critical that funds meant for healthcare, education and other social services for our poorest citizens are not spent on the Commonwealth Games.
The DA is committed to holding the provincial government to account when it comes to expenditure and to ensuring that departments do not deviate from their individual mandates.
We expect MEC Scott to table a full cost report without delay. The people of KZN must be reassured that despite the excitement of hosting such a sporting spectacle, public money will not be moved away from critical services.
