Letter to the Editor – School appointments a free for all bun fight with no regard for learners

By Mbali Ntuli, MPL, DA KZN Spokesperson on Education:

LAST week, ongoing infighting over appointments within KZN’s schools reached a terrible climax with the brutal slaying of Pietermaritzburg principal, Nokthula Magwanyana.

The DA is deeply saddened by this incident and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

We call for swift action in finding the perpetrators of this despicable act and for harsh punishment.

KZN’s education department has allowed internal strife over school appointments to carry on for far too long with the result that many schools are becoming war zones.

Not only are lives at risk, the matter is also compromising the safety and learning of our pupils.

The DA believes that once again MEC Peggy Nkonyeni must show leadership over the factional battles happening in districts all over KZN.

Her reluctance to date has created a gap, allowing a ‘free for all bun fight’ amongst unions and their members, with no regard for what is best for learners.
