Water wastage at Coega pipeline an outrageous municipal failure

By Nqaba Bhanga MP, Shadow Deputy Minister of COGTA:

It is an outrageous and inexcusable failure of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to allow millions of litres of water to be wasted every day in the Coega IDZ. What is most devastating for our Metro is that this wastage could have supplied water to tens of thousands of homes every day that currently have no water.

The discovery of this massive water wastage, by our DA Mayoral Candidate Athol Trollip, demonstrates the DA’s commitment to hold the municipality to account while offering a vision for a better Nelson Mandela Bay after the 2016 elections. The DA is set on winning Nelson Mandela Bay next year.

Water scarcity is an enormous problem in our Metro, with broken and leaking pipes across the Metro. A stalling Nooitgedacht water project, and the highest water losses of any Metro in South Africa make water supply one of the greatest failures of NMB.

I will be putting in Parliamentary questions on this water wastage and on why millions of litres have been allowed to escape without intervention from the Metro, or intervention from the Water and Sanitation department.

The DA will implement an immediate water recovery plan when in local government, including fixing the pipes, stopping the leaks, upgrading water supply infrastructure, and expanding access to clean water to every resident of the Bay. Where the DA governs we have cut water loss to the lowest levels, and we can do the same for Nelson Mandela Bay.

This weekend, we are launching the Trollip-For-Mayor Campaign in Nelson Mandela Bay, to bring change to the Bay – it is time for a government that delivers on its promises, so that people have access to the services they need and so that wastage and corruption are cut out.
