Zama Zamas crippling Gauteng’s economy”

Speech highlights:

  • Illegal mining in Gauteng has reached an all-time high and the situation has become untenable.
  • The safety of innocent community members living around these mines are compromised on a daily basis.
  • Legislative changes need to take place as a matter of urgency, law enforcement mostly arrest Zama Zamas for trespassing.
  • SAPS in the Province is not able to police illegal mining pro-actively with the current resources, training and budget available
  • We desperately need to turn this situation around is a competent, fully equipped and thoroughly trained officers to be at the frontline in combatting this scourge.

A gap in the market for small scale regulated artisanal miners

  • Estimates are that up to 10% of South Africa’s gold production is stolen or smuggled out of the country, an estimated loss of R5.6 billion a year
  • Illegal mining has both a humanitarian and a financial dimension.
  • The current government is notoriously poor at regulation, illegal miners are almost all immigrants and there is no solution to the country’s porous borders in sight.

  • Illegal activities are orchestrated and are syndicated with foot soldiers doing dirty work for the faceless bosses
  • The DA is in favour of ensuring that legislation regarding mining is adhered to by all parties
  • Illegal mining thus creates lawlessness and a dangerous spiral of criminal
  • DA calls on the Gauteng Provincial Government to play a leading role in ensuring that proper measures are implemented to eradicate the practice of illegal mining

“Gauteng held hostage by organised crime syndicates

  • Illegal mining finances criminal gangs and syndicates
  • The broad nature of illegal mining makes it impossible for station level detectives to have the required knowledge to deal with illegal miners effectively
  • The minister of Police should re-introduce specialised units to address the issue on a National basis, but Gauteng can put a provincial specialised unit in place.
  • We must act now or forever be held hostage by the organised crime syndicates that control this business
