By Andrew Louw, MPL, DA Provincial Chairperson in the Northern Cape:
The Democratic Alliance welcomes the resignation of John Block as provincial chairperson of the ANC as well as the MEC for Finance, Economic Development & Tourism and a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature.
This resignation is long overdue and is something that the DA has been fighting for since charges were laid. It is unfortunate that the ANC had to be reminded through a court of law through judge Phatsoane’s verdict yesterday that Mr Block is not fit to hold public office.
We are happy that Mr. Block did the honourable thing and resigned. His resignation is a victory for the people of the Northern Cape and vindicates the DA’s position that he must go. We said that Mr. Block must go and he did.
We take note of the appointment of the current speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Kenny Mmoeimang, to fill the vacancies that Mr. Block leaves. In his previous capacity as MEC for COGHSTA, Mmoeimang failed to address a number of crucial priorities and we trust that he will take his new roles more seriously.
The position of MEC for Finance, Economic Development & Tourism must be filled by a skilled person with the necessary integrity. This is a very strategic portfolio requiring an official who has the interests of the public at heart, not another cadre who will just be deployed.
It is also unfortunate that the ANC chose to promote a man who is facing very serious charges of domestic violence.
