By Jacques Smalle MPL, DA Provincial Spokesperson COGHSTA:
Thabazimbi Municipality will finally be placed under administration. This was confirmed by the MEC for Cooperative Governance , Makoma Makhurupetje, in reply to a member statement delivered by myself in the legislature yesterday.
The DA welcomes the swift response of the MEC and the acknowledgement by her that this embattled municipality is in serious trouble.
The municipal assets such as office equipment , trucks and vehicles were recently repossessed by Sherriff due to non payment of service providers worth more than R50 million.
The municipality is also reported to be owing Eskom more than R80 million and is embroiled in a legal battle with Anglo American Platinum mine for increasing their rates and taxes without consulting with the mine and the affected communities.
The DA urges the MEC to appoint an experienced, independent administrator as well as a competent Chief Financial Officer and legal advisor to turn the financial and administrative affairs of the municipality around to ensure that services are accelerated to the people Thabazimbi.
The administrator must firstly review all current projects and their allocated budgets to ensure that there is transparency and accountability.
The DA reiterates to the MEC to release the multiple forensic audits being withheld by the municipality and to implementation the recommendations contained therein.
