By Dr Tutu Faleni MPL, DA North West Education Spokesperson:
The Democratic Alliance in the North West calls for the immediate suspension of a Lokaleng School Governing Body (SGB) Chairperson who is accused of raping a 10 year old learner at a school in Taung.
While he serves as the chairperson there can be no healing and recovery for the raped learner. The raped learner is forced to confront her alleged attacker, as a senior official at her school daily, until he is suspended and removed from the campus.
In a case where the alleged rapist is in a position of authority over his victim, the victim should be protected until the case is concluded.
The increase of rape of school children from rural villages in the province is alarming and these children should not be submitted to further anxiety and stress.
The DA’s vision is to create a society that upholds the rights of women and children and protects survivors from further hurt.
The DA will write to the MEC of Education Ms Wendy Matsemela asking her that the chairperson immediately be dismissed until his criminal trial is concluded.
