Tswaing’s poor waste management results in rodent infestation

By Carin Visser, DA North West Chairperson and Tswaing Caucus Leader:

The Democratic Alliance in Tswaing is concerned with the municipality’s inability to manage solid waste which in turn causes health hazards to the residents.

Tswaing municipality is responsible for the scourge of giant rats that have infested the Sannieshof, Agisanang and Phelindaba areas and the municipality’s inaction continues to expose the residents to this disease carrying pests.

The landfills sites in Delareyville and Ottosdal have been subjected to negligence, mismanagement and ecological degradation.

The DA’s vision is to ensure a clean healthy sustainable environment which is critical for winning the fight against the burden of diseases.

The municipality has failed to uphold the constitutional mandate that requires it to prevent pollution and environmental degradation.

It has also violated their human rights to an environment that is not harmful to their health and wellbeing.

The DA will be launching a petition which we will submit to the Green Scorpions and Centre for Environmental Rights to take action against the failing of basic services in Tswaing.

The DA will write to the MEC of Environmental Affairs Me Manketsi Tlhape to demand the presentation of an action plan that will prevent and manage solid waste. The DA will also deliver input into the action plan.

The DA will furthermore demand at the next council meeting that urgent attention be given to the rodent plague by putting out a tender for a service provider who will eradicate the problem in an environmentally friendly and humane manner.

Where the DA governs we ensure that people live in a clean sustainable and environment. This is the vision the DA wants to bring in all areas of the country.
