By Kingsol Chabalala MPL, DA Gauteng Constituency Head – Emfuleni North:
The DA is pleased to announce, that as a result of our oversight visits and sustained pressure on the Gauteng Department of Education, all Evaton West Primary School’s learners are now receiving meals on a daily basis.
The DA found that only 160 out of 500 learners were receiving meals at the school. We raised this with the provincial department of education and now all learners receive meals.
This follows the DA also ensuring that electricity was restored at the school in May.
Evaton West Primary had struggled without a constant electricity supply since March last year. While the school was supplied with solar panels, as a temporary solution, these were stolen and not replaced, which meant teachers and learners were forced to make do without electricity.
While Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, promised to ensure electricity was restored at the school, this did not happen.
The DA there lodged a petition with the Gauteng education department, demanding that electricity be restored with immediate effect. As a result, electricity was finally restored at the school.
The DA believes it is critical that all learners receive a quality education. This is the only way we will be able to break the cycle of poverty and ensure our youth have a better future.
We will continue to conduct oversight visits to Evaton West Primary and other schools in the province, to ensure learners have access to the education they deserve.
