Diabetes Awareness Month: Fighting Diabetes through focusing on wellness

Today, 24 November 2015, Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will join a group of elderly people at the Metrorail’s 22nd Platform for a Senior Citizen’s Wellness Day as part of Diabetes Awareness Month.

Throughout the month of November, the Department of Health has been educating society on the importance of diabetes prevention and control.

Diabetes is the fifth highest cause of natural deaths in South Africa, and the number one cause of natural deaths in the Western Cape. It is often dubbed as a silent killer because many people suffer the illness but are not aware because they are not presenting symptoms.

The senior citizens are all part of the Western Cape on Wellness (WOW) Healthy Lifestyles initiative which aims to promote wellness as a way of combatting chronic diseases like Diabetes.

The Minister will join the participants in their exercise routines and wellness check-ups.
