By Jack Bloom MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health:
The Helen Joseph Hospital in west Johannesburg is struggling as it has run out of water because of a water cut-off in the local area.
Non-emergency operations have had to be cancelled and other crucial activities are affected.
Ms Rachel Brits came at 6 am today for renal dialysis which she has to do three times a week. She was told that it would be delayed as there is no water.
There are water tanks to assist but they can’t compensate for the lack of piped water.
Hygiene will suffer and infections could increase.
It is hugely distressing for both staff and patients.
We need an emergency water plan to ensure that hospitals have a reliable water supply throughout this water crisis period.
