By Masizole Mnqasela, MPP, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Local Government:
On Sunday, 1 November 2015, an electricity pylon collapsed onto a house in Sunningdale, Table View. The house was crushed by the fall.
I have submitted written questions the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell, requesting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. In particular, I have inquired about Eskom’s responsibility in maintaining power supply infrastructure.
As a result of lack of maintenance, the foundation of the pylon had eroded due to rust. As such, the pylon was not strong enough to withstand the stormy winds which caused its collapse on Sunday. The fall of the pylon also caused a water pipe to burst, flooding the house on which it fell.
We cannot afford to place the lives of community members in jeopardy due to lack of maintenance. Where regular maintenance does not take place and a serious breakdown of infrastructure occurs, it results in unnecessary risk and expenditure. The efficient and safe supply of electricity to industry, business and households is of utmost importance.
The DA in the Western Cape will continue to do its best to ensure proper oversight over the delivery of services to the people of this province, as they are entitled to receive.
