Mopani is a fire disaster in waiting

By Pierre Cronje (Cllr) Tzaneen Municipality, DA Councillor:

The Democratic Alliance is inviting the MEC for CoGHSTA Makoma Makhurupetje to conduct oversight visits to the Mopani district municipality to experience the derelict state of our fire department’s resources.

After several oversight visits to stations across the district, the DA is convinced that the district and its local municipalities have neglected the fire department.

This unmaintained state of our fire engines compounded by the drought and current heat wave is clearly placing the lives of both people and  wildlife at risk should a fire occur.

The stations under this district operate with skeleton staff and scant resouI68rces.

The DA can confirm that:

  • Tzaneen fire station has six broken vehicles
  • Phalaborwa fire station has three broken vehicles
  • 70% of all staff appointed in 2008 are not qualified
  • Some vehicles are too old to deliver services
  • Lack of personnel training

It is clear that this ANC governed municipality and its local councils could care less about the environment and human life.

The DA urges the MEC for CoGHSTA to investigate this serious matter and to set a clear timeframe within which all maintenance and upgrades must take place.
