NMB unemployment highest in SA – Deputy President has no new answers to my questions in Parliament

By Athol Trollip,┬áDA Mayoral Candidate – Nelson Mandela Bay:

Today I took the fight for jobs and meaningful work for the people of Nelson Mandela Bay to Parliament.

In the National Council of Provinces I pressed the Deputy President to provide answers on the massive unemployment crisis plaguing our people in Nelson Mandela Bay.

It is a tragic fact that at 34.3% unemployed, NMB is now home to the highest unemployment in any Metro in South Africa, as the ANC Local Government neglects the economy, cuts out businesses and allows corruption to thrive.

ANC governance and leadership instability has brought increasing job shedding to Nelson Mandela Bay, rather than job creation.

We are in the midst of a war for jobs as unemployment rises, and I am working to bring economic growth to our Metro through a DA-governed NMB after Election 2016.

Yet today, in Parliament, the Deputy President had no new answers to my questions about tackling unemployment in the Bay.

The Deputy President offered no credible solutions for the jobless of NMB, and no plan to grow an economy that will create the hundreds of thousands of jobs we need.

Small-time interventions and one-hit-wonder job projects are not the solution, yet the ANC can’t see this.

I am running for Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay because I have a plan to grow the Bay’s economy by working with businesses to incentivize growth, to grow new job zones and to train entrepreneurs and artisans.

I want to work with the Coega IDZ to attract unprecedented investment, grow our skills base and boost our manufacturing output. Entrepreneurs will flourish in NMB as we cut red tape and roll out the red carpet to small businesses.

While Ramaphosa glosses over the devastating job losses in NMB, I will continue to take up this fight.

The DA is set on winning NMB in next year’s election so that we can stop corruption, start delivery and create jobs. As Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay I will turn Nelson Mandela Bay into a city of rising opportunity for all.
