By Mireille Wenger MPP, Western Cape Spokesperson on Community safety:
The DA in the Western Cape congratulates the Department of Community Safety for receiving the gold award for the Best Functioning Provincial Department at the Annual Batho Pele Excellence Awards this month.
Each year the National Department of Public Service and Administration recognises civil servants and departments for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that the best services are provided to the public. A number of awards were given to departments and individuals for their outstanding achievements.
The Department has been characterised by innovation and in many ways has been a path-finder. It has shifted to a focussed, evidence based programme of action, grounded in its mandate. The Community Safety Act, is a first of its kind for any province in South Africa. While Provinces have no operational control over the police, this Department is defining police oversight as contemplated in the Constitution of the Republic and proving the impact that proper oversight can have.
The Western Cape Department of Community Safety was conferred a gold award for the best functioning provincial department. The awards were based on the performance results of the Management Performance Assessment Tool (MPAT).
The Department must be commended for its good financial governance and performance. It is therefore reassuring to see that the brand of excellence, which marks the DA-led Western Cape Government, is receiving national recognition.
