Police brutality must be probed after death of arrested person

By Katlego Suzan Phala (MPL), DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Safety:

The DA welcomes the IPID’s investigation into an alleged police assault on a suspect at the Masisi police station north of Thohoyandou last weekend.

Thirty three year old Samuel Sikhwana was detained and allegedly assaulted on Sunday for stealing a police officer’s service pistol at the Masisi police station.

The family now accuses the police for his death. They claim to have heard his screams during their visiting hours.

In a South Africa led by the DA, we will dismiss any police officer found guilty of a criminal offence and let the criminal justice system run its course.

The DA will submit written questions to the MEC for safety, Mapula Phukwane, to establish the prevalence of police brutality in the province, and measures in place to prevent police turning on the public.
