As schools reopen, DA will assess school readiness

By Jacques Smalle MPL, DA Provincial Spokesperson Education:

The DA in Limpopo wishes all learners the very best in 2016 as it is only through education that dreams can become a reality.

Shortage of skilled teachers which directly impacts on quality education remains a concern. The department must prioritise the employment of skilled teachers particularly in mathematics and physical science.

According to Annual Performance Plan (APP) for 2015/2016 , the department will employ 8,600 new teachers. During the 2014/2015 financial year, the department employed only 8 000 teachers out of the targeted 12,000.

The DA reiterates our call to have skills audits for teachers and urges the department to utilise its entire budget of the Funza Lushaka bursary scheme to increase the capacity of Limpopo teachers.

The department must further ensure that all textbooks and other learning materials are at schools tomorrow to avoid another 2012 textbooks debacle.

The DA will be conducting random oversight visits to public schools across the province to ascertain school readiness, and will be monitoring textbook rollout.
