DA urges Premier Mathabatha to intervene on Tubatse unrest

By Langa Bodlani MPL, Tubatse Constituency Head:

The current violent protest in Tubatse between community members and the mining sector is a source of grave concern for the DA.  The violence which has erupted has reportedly already led to a loss of life and serious injuries after police opened fire on the angry protesters last night.

More serious engagement is needed to put an end to this.

Schools and other economic activities have since came to a halt due to the violent protest. In no way should schooling be affected by this.

There are serious grievances raised by the communities which warrant open and frank discussions between them and the mining sector in the area. This is where the provincial government must step in as an impartial facilitator to bring about amicable solutions.  Up to so far government’s role in this has been rather lacklustre as the violence seems to be unending.

The DA urges Premier Stanley Mathabatha to urgently intervene and facilitate discussions between the affected Burgersfort communities and the mining companies.
